Although color blind people function the same as regular people, there are still certain types of jobs that they are not eligible to do.
Those types of jobs involve the need for not just good color detection, but good eyesight in general.
The most common jobs that a color blind person can not do or will have trouble getting in to:
- driving motor vehicles: In some countries, not only are people not allowed to work in the vehicle driving business, but they can also not receive a drivers licence (one of those countries is Romania)
- piloting airplanes and other aircraft
- mixing color for construction and print industries
- police officer/law enforcement (you can still become a police officer while color blind but it is a huge handicap and it might disable initiation for some people)
- multimedia (TV producing, picture editing, graphic design,...all that can be a challenge for color blind people)
- military
- electronics (wires of different colors might become troublesome)
There are a lot of things that color blind people have trouble with. Some jobs are unreachable and some can be obtained but with a extreme showing of discipline and a lot of hard work. It all depends on how bad your eyesight when it comes to color actually is.
Here are also some useful links from other blogs and websites, where people talk about their troubles with careers as a color blind person.(some of the information in this post was also drawn from those websites):
